Scots seaside town unites to clean up 1000kg of litter from beaches this year

Residents of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire have come together to tackle the issue of litter on their local beaches, with more than 1000 kilograms of waste being removed this year. The community has been actively involved in monthly beach cleans organized by Plastic Free Stonehaven and Paws On Plastic since February. The success of these efforts can be seen in the dedication of between 30 to 40 volunteers who have collectively logged 917 volunteer hours to clean up the shores.
The volunteers, of all ages including school groups and youth organizations, have shown a remarkable commitment to preserving the beauty of their coastline. Marion Montgomery, founder of Paws On Plastic and lead of Plastic Free Stonehaven, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from various sectors of the Stonehaven community. The environmental impact of these beach cleans is significant, with Plastic Free Stonehaven recently achieving “plastic-free” status from Surfers Against Sewage, along with nine local businesses. Paws On Plastic, in addition to promoting responsible pet ownership by encouraging dog owners to pick up litter during walks, also educates on the harmful effects of litter on animals and the environment.
