Scots student confessed on camera to raping sleeping girl saying ‘I have done something terrible’

A Scots student has been sentenced to prison after confessing on camera to raping a sleeping girl, admitting, “I have done something terrible.” Ethan Campbell, a university student, made the confession to a friend of the victim after the teenage girl fell asleep during a ‘movie night’ at a student accommodation in Dundee.
The High Court in Dundee heard that the victim’s friend persuaded Campbell to confess on video to raping the girl while she was heavily intoxicated and asleep. In the recorded confession, Campbell acknowledged that he had taken advantage of the situation and committed the crime of rape, stating that he believed he had consent, but it was clear that she did not.
The video confession gave the victim the courage to report the assault to the police two weeks after the incident occurred in September 2022. During police questioning, Campbell expressed his regret and admitted that he had not obtained consent from the victim before engaging in sexual activity with her.
The court heard that Campbell had been alone with the victim in her bedroom after her flatmate had fallen asleep. He proceeded to undress and have sex with the victim while she was asleep, leading her to wake up during the assault. Campbell subsequently left the room and sent the victim an apology by text the following day.
Campbell’s defence solicitor acknowledged the gravity of the situation, describing it as a tragic case. Despite Campbell’s vulnerability, he accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged that he would face the consequences, including a period of imprisonment.
Following the court proceedings, Campbell has been remanded in prison and is set to be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on 17 December.
In light of this case, it is crucial to raise awareness about consent and the importance of obtaining explicit consent before engaging in any sexual activity. It is a reminder of the need for ongoing education and dialogue around issues of sexual consent and assault, particularly on university campuses where young people may be vulnerable to such incidents.
In conclusion, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting boundaries and obtaining consent in all sexual encounters. It highlights the need for continued efforts to educate and raise awareness about consent to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Such actions are reprehensible and have serious consequences, as demonstrated by the legal outcome in this case.
