Scots teen left to die watching Tipping Point was at risk of ‘significant harm’ due to neglect

A fatal accident inquiry revealed that a 13-year-old teenager, Robyn Goldie, who tragically passed away while watching the TV show Tipping Point, was at risk of “significant harm” due to neglect and drug abuse at her home. The inquiry, held at Hamilton Sheriff Court, heard that Robyn died while her mother, Sharon Goldie, went to the pub. Robyn had returned to her mother’s home in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, after spending eight years with her grandmother.

Colin Anderson, a social work veteran who compiled reports for the inquiry, expressed concerns about Robyn’s welfare. He indicated that neglect and emotional abuse were evident in the case, highlighting the lack of parental care and the exposure to alcohol and drug abuse in the household. The relationship between Robyn and her mother was described as more sibling-like than parental.

The court was informed that Robyn had seen a nurse a week before her passing in July 2018 but did not raise any health concerns during the visit. This lack of disclosure meant that support workers were unaware of any issues that needed attention. Anderson stated that from the support workers’ perspective, there were no red flags indicating harm as Robyn had appeared fine and had not shown signs of illness.

North Lanarkshire Council initiated a significant case review following Robyn’s death and made changes to social work practices as a result. The inquiry also heard disturbing details, such as Goldie instructing Robyn not to report an alleged rape and exposing her to witnessing her intoxicated mother engaging in sexual activities with men at home. Goldie pleaded guilty to neglect and ill-treatment and was sentenced to three years and six months in October 2020.

The Sheriff Linda Nicolson is overseeing the ongoing inquiry to delve further into the circumstances surrounding Robyn’s tragic passing. The inquiry serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and the need for vigilant oversight and intervention in cases of neglect and abuse.

My insights:
It is heartbreaking to hear about cases of neglect and abuse that lead to such tragic outcomes, especially when involving vulnerable young individuals like Robyn. This story highlights the vital role of social services and support workers in identifying and addressing concerns to prevent harm and protect those at risk. The inquiry’s findings underscore the importance of continuous improvement in safeguarding practices to ensure the safety and well-being of children and teenagers in vulnerable situations.
