Seal pup rescued from Scots beach after being found ‘severely malnourished’

A seal pup was rescued from an East Lothian beach after being found severely malnourished over the weekend. The mammal was quickly attended to by medics from British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on the North Berwick seafront. The pup was then transported to a rehabilitation centre where she will receive care to regain weight and learn essential skills needed to thrive in the wild before being released back into her natural habitat. BDMLR has expressed optimism that the seal pup will go on to lead a healthy and happy life.

The BDMLR team shared the heartwarming news on their Facebook page, highlighting the importance of their medics in rescuing the malnourished pup. They advised locals who come across seals on the beach that it is not uncommon for them to be resting on land, especially after stormy weather or high tides. While many seals do not require immediate intervention, BDMLR always recommends having them checked by a professional to ensure their well-being.

BDMLR emphasised the significance of protecting marine life and shared information on their website for those interested in learning more about conservation efforts. They also provided guidance on how to support and care for seals found on beaches, underscoring the importance of coexisting with wildlife in a sustainable manner.

This heartening rescue serves as a reminder of the crucial role organisations like BDMLR play in safeguarding marine animals and preserving biodiversity. It is a testament to the dedication and compassion of the medics who work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of marine life in distress. Through collective efforts and awareness, we can continue to protect and nurture our precious wildlife for generations to come.
