Senior Scots Labour politician ‘bombarded Ukrainian refugees with sex texts’

A senior Scottish Labour politician has been suspended by Scottish Labour and is under police investigation for allegedly bombarding Ukrainian refugees with inappropriate messages, including sexual texts. Cammy Day, the leader of Edinburgh City Council, reportedly contacted the refugees on social media, asked about their sexual preferences, tried to arrange dates, and sent compliments on their looks. Two Ukrainian refugees have come forward, saying they felt pressured to respond to Day’s messages due to his position of authority. The refugees described feeling uncomfortable and afraid to reject Day’s advances.
One refugee, who fled the Russian invasion in 2022, shared messages with the Sunday Mail showing Day asking explicit questions, sending emojis, and repeatedly suggesting they meet up. Despite feeling pressured, the refugee tried to avoid discussing sexual topics. Another refugee, who has since left Edinburgh, also received numerous messages from Day and felt overwhelmed by his actions. Police are investigating the councillor’s conduct over the past 18 months, including complaints made to the council and the police.
Last year, a councillor reported Day’s behaviour towards a Ukrainian refugee to council officials, who advised them to contact the police. However, the police found no criminality in the initial reports. Concerns have been raised about the power dynamic in the situation, with vulnerable refugees feeling unable to speak out against Day’s advances. The Labour Party has placed Day on administrative suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.
In response to the allegations, a Labour Party spokesperson stated that all complaints are taken seriously and investigated according to party rules. Edinburgh City Council confirmed that they have cooperated with authorities regarding the matter. Police Scotland acknowledged receiving a report of inappropriate behaviour and are carrying out enquiries to determine the full circumstances. Day has not commented on the allegations but has denied being contacted by the police.
The case highlights the importance of addressing inappropriate behaviour and misconduct, especially when it involves individuals in positions of authority interacting with vulnerable populations. Ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees and holding individuals accountable for their actions is crucial for upholding ethical standards and fostering a respectful and inclusive community.
In light of this incident, it is essential for organisations and authorities to have robust procedures in place for handling complaints of misconduct and ensuring that individuals are held accountable for their actions. Transparency, accountability, and a commitment to creating a safe environment for all members of society are paramount in addressing such issues and promoting a culture of respect and dignity.
