Sheriff locks up high-risk knife offender after Motherwell tower block incident

Sheriff John Hamilton has incarcerated a high-risk knife offender following an incident at a tower block in Motherwell. Aiden Gaitens, aged 20, was discovered on the ninth floor of Barons Tower carrying a machete, which he claimed was for protection. However, Sheriff Hamilton expressed his concerns, stating that the combination of young men and knives, especially machetes, is troubling and that knives do not provide protection but instead cause harm.
Gaitens, who appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court from custody, pleaded guilty to carrying an offensive weapon at Barons Tower on August 11. The police were called to a disturbance at the tower block at around 8:30 pm, where they encountered Gaitens brandishing a large machete in a stairwell on the ninth floor. A brief chase ensued, during which Gaitens faced the officers with the blade before eventually dropping it when instructed by a taser-wielding officer.
At the time of the incident, Gaitens was under a supervised release order after serving a 23-month sentence for various offenses, including assaulting a man with a knife in Tollhouse Gardens, Bellshill. Social workers have identified Gaitens as a high risk for reoffending. Despite Gaitens’ lawyer advocating for a non-custodial sentence due to his troubled background, Sheriff Hamilton sentenced him to 12 months in custody, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and Gaitens’ previous criminal record involving weapons.
This case sheds light on the ongoing issue of knife crime and the risks associated with carrying weapons. It serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing the root causes of such behavior and the need for effective interventions to prevent further incidents. The decision made by Sheriff Hamilton underscores the severity of the offense and sends a strong message about the consequences of carrying weapons in society. It is crucial for authorities to continue addressing and tackling knife crime to ensure the safety of communities.
