A Shotts retailer who recently saved a customer in distress has been honoured with a prestigious industry award. Alison Lennon, the manager of the Day-Today store in Shotts, received the Scottish Local Retailer’s inaugural Astonishing Act Award for her heroism, which left the judges moved to tears. With over two decades of experience working in the local store, Alison’s deep understanding of her community members proved crucial when one of the elderly regulars failed to show up for his daily newspaper one morning.
Alison’s intuition kicked in, prompting her to visit the gentleman’s house to ensure his well-being. Her fears were validated when she discovered that the man had fallen in his bath the previous night, leaving him stranded in the cold tub without assistance. Unable to enter the house without a key, Alison comforted him through the letterbox while alerting emergency services, who had to break down the door to rescue him. Alison’s close ties with the community and quick actions led to the man’s timely rescue, potentially saving his life.
Expressing her sentiments, Alison shared, “I’m used to my regular shoppers coming into the shop at the same time every day. I know them all so well and I know if there’s something not right. I’ll always check on them and make sure they’re okay or if they need help with anything. It’s just what I do.” She added, “The relationship I have with my customers is the best thing about my job. It genuinely means so much and there’s nothing else I’d rather do.”
Lorraine Macpherson, United Wholesale’s symbol development manager, lauded Alison as an “absolute superstar.” Alison was presented with the award at the SLR’s Above & Beyond Awards, which aim to celebrate and reward exceptional individuals in the retail sector who go the extra mile for their customers.
