Site works on new Monklands Hospital stepping up as plans move forward

Site works are progressing for the new Monklands Hospital as plans continue to move forward in Airdrie. Following successful earth settlement trials, additional preparatory works are commencing at the site of the groundbreaking hospital at Wester Moffat. Graeme Reid, director of the Monklands Replacement Project (MRP), mentioned that in the upcoming weeks, as part of the ongoing preparations for construction work, some trees on the site will need to be removed.

These tree works will be conducted by a contractor appointed by NHS Lanarkshire, with the timing scheduled seasonally to reduce the impact on existing habitats. As part of the landscape masterplan for the new University Hospital Monklands, substantial areas of new woodland and associated planting will be established surrounding the hospital and the broader Wester Moffat site. The new woodland to be created will exceed the area of the trees being removed.

The MRP is also developing a Tree Compensation and Management Plan in accordance with local authority and NatureScot guidelines to enhance the landscape and biodiversity of the area through the project. ScottishPower Energy Networks (SPEN) will also be carrying out work to reroute electricity pylons to accommodate the new hospital. These activities, subject to a regulatory “energy consent” process from the Scottish Government, will involve trimming and removal of trees on the site.

Construction vehicles and equipment will be present on-site as the MRP and SPEN progress with their respective work. As the advancements at the site of the new Monklands Hospital continue, the local community eagerly anticipates the future healthcare facility.

Insights:

The progress made on the new Monklands Hospital signifies a significant development for the healthcare infrastructure in the Airdrie area.
