Skye shooting-accused ‘not impaired’ by mental disorders, psychologist tells court

A psychologist testified in court that Finlay MacDonald, the man accused of murdering his brother-in-law, was not significantly impaired by mental disorders in his ability to control his actions. At the High Court in Edinburgh, the psychologist stated that while MacDonald had undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder, personality disorder, and was experiencing low mood and anxiety at the time of the alleged murder, these conditions did not significantly impair his ability to control his actions. MacDonald is accused of attempting to murder his wife by repeatedly stabbing her and also of murdering his brother-in-law by firing a shotgun at him on the same day. The court heard that MacDonald armed himself with weapons and set off with the motivation to confront others with whom he felt aggrieved.

During the trial, the psychologist mentioned that MacDonald acknowledged his wrongdoing when he attacked his wife and expressed a lack of hope for his future. He is further accused of attempting to murder another couple by discharging a shotgun at them. Despite the charges, MacDonald has pleaded not guilty and maintains that his ability to determine or control his conduct was substantially impaired by abnormality of mind at the time of the alleged offense.

The trial continues before judge Lady Drummond as the court delves into the details of the case and MacDonald’s mental state during the events in question. The defense and prosecution will present their arguments as they seek to determine the outcome of the trial and the implications for MacDonald.

In conclusion, the court proceedings shed light on the complexities of the case and the importance of understanding the accused’s mental state at the time of the alleged crimes. The expert testimony provided insights into MacDonald’s mental health conditions and how they may have influenced his actions, highlighting the need for a thorough examination of all factors involved in such cases.
