‘Smirking’ Paedophile Warned to Expect Jail Time for Sexually Abusing Two Girls in Airdrie and Coatbridge
A “smirking” paedophile has been warned that he is likely to face prison time after confessing to sexually abusing two girls in Airdrie and Coatbridge. Airdrie Sheriff Court was informed that the victims have experienced mental health issues since Gerald O’Hare, 58, targeted them in the 1980s and 90s.
O’Hare, who appeared in Airdrie Sheriff Court, admitted two charges of lewd, indecent, and libidinous behaviour towards the victims. The court heard that he exposed himself and engaged in inappropriate acts in front of the first victim between 1982 and 1985. Similarly, O’Hare behaved in a similar manner towards the second girl between 1995 and the following year, also touching her inappropriately.
Prosecutor Sarah Healing revealed that both victims reported O’Hare smirking at them while carrying out the abusive acts, instilling fear in the victims. One of the victims, who was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder five years ago, reported the abuse to the police last year. The other victim, who has battled depression and anxiety, decided to come forward after hearing about the historical abuse report.
O’Hare, previously residing in Airdrie and Coatbridge but now living in Dumfries, was placed on the sex offenders’ register, with sentencing deferred until further background reports are obtained. Sheriff Paul Haran expressed hesitation in allowing O’Hare to remain on bail, emphasizing that the possibility of custody was strongly being considered.
In conclusion, the court proceedings shed light on the devastating impact of sexual abuse on the victims’ mental health and wellbeing, highlighting the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
This case serves as a poignant reminder of the long-lasting effects of such crimes on survivors and underscores the need for continued efforts to support and empower victims of sexual abuse while ensuring that perpetrators face justice for their reprehensible actions.
