SNP Government announces extra funding for free school meals and breakfast clubs in Scottish Budget

The Scottish National Party (SNP) Government has announced additional funding for free school meals and breakfast clubs as part of the Scottish Budget. Finance Secretary Shona Robison unveiled the plans on Wednesday, revealing that the government would collaborate with the local authority body Cosla to provide free school meals for disadvantaged children. Robison also introduced a new initiative named Bright Start Breakfasts, aimed at establishing more breakfast clubs across primary schools in Scotland.

Currently, the Government offers free school meals for pupils in years one to five, with plans to extend the provision to children from low-income families in the final two years of primary school. Robison emphasised that the objective of the breakfast clubs is to support working parents while ensuring children have a better start to their day. She expressed, “To be called ‘Bright Start Breakfasts’, this will make things that little bit easier for working mums and dads, while also giving more of our kids a better start to their day.”

Moreover, the Government intends to collaborate with Cosla to expand free school meals to primary 6 and 7 students from low-income backgrounds. This initiative aligns with the SNP’s commitment to supporting families and children in need across Scotland.
