South Lanarkshire Council Celebrates Hamilton Academical FC’s 150th Birthday

South Lanarkshire Council has extended warm wishes to Hamilton Academical FC on their momentous 150th anniversary. The council members unanimously passed a motion on Thursday to honour the football club for its remarkable milestone. Established in late 1874 by the rector James Blacklock and students of Hamilton Academy, the club holds a prestigious position as one of the oldest senior football clubs in Scotland.

The motion recognises Hamilton Academical FC’s rich history, being the sole professional club in the UK originating from a school team. Over the past 150 years, the club has competed across all divisions of the league and played at various locations in Hamilton before settling at Douglas Park from 1888 to 1994. In 2001, the club returned to the town with the inauguration of New Douglas Park, situated at the heart of the community next to Hamilton West train station.

Councillor Colin Dewar proposed the motion, with Councillor Mary Donnelly seconding it, showcasing a bipartisan show of support. The council acknowledged the club’s significant contributions to the local community and applauded their achievements. The motion also conveyed best wishes for the 2024/25 season and the club’s future endeavours.

Hamilton Academical FC’s enduring legacy and impact on the region were highlighted, with the council commending the club, its staff, and supporters. This celebration of sportsmanship and local pride underscores the deep-rooted connection between the football club and the community it serves.

In a time where sports bring communities together, Hamilton Academical FC stands as a beacon of unity and resilience, embodying the spirit of Lanarkshire. As they mark this historic milestone, the club’s journey inspires not just football fans but all residents of South Lanarkshire, showcasing the power of dedication and passion in achieving enduring success. The anniversary celebration serves as a reminder of the rich sporting heritage that unites the people of Hamilton and beyond.
