Stirling railway station ranked as one of the most used stations in Scotland


Stirling’s railway station has recently been recognised as one of the top 10 most used stations in Scotland. The Office for Rail and Road shared the rankings of the most and least used railway stations in the country, based on the number of entries and exits between April 2023 and March this year. Stirling station secured the seventh spot, with 2.4 million entries and exits. Topping the list was Glasgow Central with 25 million, followed by Edinburgh Waverley with 21.3 million and Glasgow Queen Street with 14.5 million entries and exits.

On the other end, the top 10 least used stations included Kildonan (240); Scotscalder (242); Altnabreac (250); Beasdale (260); Culrain (300); Lochluichart (374); Locheilside (418); Invershin (440); Duncraig (448); and Achanalt (506). London Liverpool Street station was noted as Great Britain’s most used railway station, while Denton in Greater Manchester held the title of Great Britain’s least used station with only 54 entries and exits.

Feras Alshaker, Director of Planning and Performance at the Office of Rail and Road, emphasised the importance of these statistics in understanding changing travel patterns across the country. In June 2023, Stirling station underwent a £5 million renovation, which included redesigning public areas, introducing a pedestrianised plaza, and enhancing accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters.

The station also implemented a new controlled entry and exit system, expanded bike parking with a ‘CyclePoint’, and upgraded customer facilities like lounges and accessible toilets. These improvements aimed to provide a more comfortable and efficient experience for passengers at Stirling station.
