Residents in the Stirling area are being reminded to take extra precautions when traveling in adverse weather conditions as the Stirling Council and local communities gear up for the challenging winter months. The council’s winter service has officially commenced and will run until 18th April 2025. With over 1000km of local roads and 600km of footpaths and cycleways to maintain, the council is well-prepared for the winter season.

Gritting for main trunk roads like A82, A84, A85, and A9, along with motorway networks, falls under the responsibility of Transport Scotland. The council stocks 7,000 tonnes of salt annually to tackle critical conditions, with 3,827 tonnes used last winter alone. Additionally, 506 grit bins are strategically placed across the Stirling area and will be regularly replenished during the winter. Priority will be given to maintaining roads, footways, and cycle paths leading to essential locations such as schools, hospitals, and shops.

In collaboration with the Community Winter Volunteers programme, residents are encouraged to assist in snow clearing and salting efforts in their communities. The council supports these volunteers by providing training and equipment like high-visibility vests, gloves, and shovels. Councillor Jen Preston, Convener of the Environment, Transport and Net Zero Committee, emphasised the council’s commitment to ensuring clear and accessible pathways for all.
