Stuart Hogg given 5-year non-harassment order and fined for breaching bail

Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has been handed a five-year non-harassment order and fined for breaching bail conditions. Hogg’s sentencing for abusing his estranged wife over a five-year period has been postponed until January 9.
The 32-year-old admitted breaching bail conditions by repeatedly contacting his ex-partner, Gillian Hogg, in June. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse when he appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on November 4. The court heard that Hogg shouted and swore, tracked his ex-partner’s movements, and sent alarming and distressing messages to her.
For the breach of bail, Hogg was placed on a five-year non-harassment order and fined £600, with an additional £40 victim surcharge, at Jedburgh Sheriff Court. It was revealed that Hogg’s behaviour deteriorated after the couple moved to Exeter in 2019, leading to arguments and distressing incidents. The court was told that Hogg’s actions caused his wife to seek advice from a domestic abuse service and eventually led to their separation.
Hogg, who now plays for French club Montpellier, retired from professional rugby last year. Despite his legal troubles, he was awarded an MBE for his services to the sport. The case highlighted the serious issue of domestic abuse and the importance of seeking help in such situations.
In light of this, it is crucial for individuals facing domestic abuse to reach out to support services and for society to continue addressing and condemning such harmful behaviour.
