Study finds one scent as effective as taking a pill for better sleep


A recent study has revealed that a simple and effective way to improve sleep quality is by being exposed to the scent of your partner. The research, conducted by scientists, demonstrated that participants experienced enhanced sleep when exposed to their partner’s scent, akin to the effects of taking a sleep aid like melatonin.

In the experiments, participants slept with two different t-shirts as pillowcases – one carrying their partner’s scent and the other without any scent. The results showed a significant improvement in sleep quality when participants were exposed to their partner’s scent, suggesting that the scent may create a sense of safety and relaxation, leading to better sleep. Marlise Hofer, the study author from the University of British Columbia, noted that sleeping with a partner’s scent improved sleep efficiency by more than two per cent on average.

The research involved 155 participants who were given t-shirts worn by their romantic partners, as well as t-shirts worn by strangers or clean t-shirts. Objective measurements of sleep quality were taken using sleep monitors, revealing that participants slept better when exposed to their partner’s scent, even if they were unaware of whose scent they were exposed to. Dr. Frances Chen, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, highlighted the surprising finding that a partner’s scent can improve sleep quality subconsciously.

The researchers found that the physical presence of a long-term partner is associated with positive health outcomes such as feelings of safety and calmness, which contribute to better sleep.
