Teen Skateboarder Found Dead After Tragic Fall from Car Park

A teenage skateboarder was tragically found dead hours after texting his mum about his dinner plans. Gabriel Santer, a 15-year-old skateboard enthusiast known as Gabe, met with a fatal accident when he fell from the sixth floor of a car park in Liverpool city centre.

Gabe, a keen skateboarder from Liverpool, went out with his friends on October 3, 2020. His parents allowed him to hang out in the city centre, but when he missed his 9 pm curfew, his mum began to worry. Before his curfew, Gabe had texted his mum that he wanted ribs and chips for dinner, giving no indication of the tragedy that was to follow. His parents grew concerned when he failed to return home on time, with his mum sensing that something terrible had happened.

Tragically, it was discovered that Gabe had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, which had disoriented him at the time of the incident. The coroner, Andre Rebello, concluded that Gabe’s fall was likely accidental and not intentional. However, Gabe’s father, Johnny, believes that his son’s death could have been prevented, pointing out safety lapses at the car park where the incident occurred.

Johnny has been campaigning for legal reform and introduced ‘Gabe’s Law’ to address safety measures in multi-storey car parks. The proposed law aims to increase the height of barriers to ensure public safety. Additionally, Johnny has collaborated with local organisations to raise awareness and funds for mental health charities, in honour of Gabe’s memory.

The skateboarding community has come together to support Johnny’s cause, with an upcoming event showcasing skateboard designs for auction, with proceeds benefiting various charities. This initiative not only commemorates Gabe’s legacy but also advocates for safer environments for skaters and the public.

The tragic death of Gabriel Santer highlights the importance of prioritising safety measures in public spaces. Through collective efforts and advocacy, positive change can be achieved to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Join us in remembering Gabe’s spirit and supporting his family’s campaign for safer environments and mental health awareness within the skateboarding community.
