According to Harris, sugar plays a significant role in worsening hangovers for multiple reasons. Firstly, sugary mixers can mask the taste of alcohol in drinks, leading individuals to consume more spirits with higher alcohol content. Additionally, the combination of excess sugar and processed ingredients in alcoholic beverages can have negative effects on the body’s processing of both sugar and alcohol. For instance, glycerin, a common additive in mainstream alcohol brands, can contribute to headaches and a sore throat, commonly associated with hangovers.

Harris recommends opting for alcohol like Polish vodka that does not contain artificial ingredients to reduce the impact of glycerin and sugar. Furthermore, he highlights that sugar can cause dehydration by replacing water in the bloodstream, thereby intensifying hangover symptoms. By cutting down on sugar consumption, individuals can potentially avoid or lessen the effects of hangovers during the festive season.
