A thug has been sentenced to jail after stabbing a 15-year-old boy with a machete in a brutal attack centred around seeking “revenge” for his stepdaughter. Shaun Wilkinson carried out the horrific assault by plunging the machete into the boy’s side as he tried to flee the scene after being confronted by Wilkinson at his own home. The incident unfolded after the victim had defended against a group of bullies harassing his sister outside their residence.

Before the attack, Wilkinson warned the teenager’s mum to “just ask anyone about me” and even threatened to set their house on fire, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. The events leading up to the stabbing stemmed from the victim’s sister being bullied at school, with a group of girls – including Wilkinson’s stepdaughter – targeting the family’s property in Wirral on August 10 this year.

In response to the bullying, the boy went outside with a dog to protect his sister and home from the group of girls. Wilkinson, upon learning of the incident, armed himself with a machete and made his way to the scene. After threatening the boy’s mum and brandishing the weapon, Wilkinson attacked the teenager as he tried to escape, causing a serious injury that required surgery.

The court heard that Wilkinson, with a history of 56 previous convictions for 142 offences including possession of bladed articles, robbery, and burglary, had shown a pattern of criminal behaviour. Despite outbursts in court expressing indifference to his sentence, Wilkinson’s defence lawyer acknowledged his remorse and personal circumstances.

Wilkinson admitted to wounding with intent, possessing a bladed article, and two theft charges. In sentencing, Judge Denis Watson remarked on the severity of the attack, noting the physical and psychological impact on the victim, his family, and the community. Wilkinson received an eight-year prison term with an additional five years on licence, along with restraining orders and a serious violence reduction order.
