Tributes to Scots dad who died just two years after MND diagnosis

Tributes are pouring in for a Scottish father who tragically passed away just two years after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Patrick ‘Pat’ McGachan from Edinburgh succumbed to the debilitating illness in November 2023, leaving behind his children Scott, Stuart, Claire, and six grandchildren. In a touching gesture to honour their late father, Scott and Stuart have organised an electric Beatles Marathon for the second year in a row to raise funds for MND research.

The journey began when Pat, a massive Beatles fan, started experiencing motor difficulties which initially manifested when he dropped his guitar plectrum. The family, familiar with MND due to the work of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, received the official diagnosis in April 2022. Despite the brutal reality of the disease, the family tried to stay positive as Pat, known for his active and social nature, bravely faced the challenges posed by MND.

Motivated by their father’s love for music, particularly The Beatles, Scott and Stuart organised the first Beatles Marathon in Edinburgh in November 2023. Sadly, Pat passed away just before the event, at the age of 73. A devoted fan of The Beatles, Pat had an encyclopedic knowledge of the band and their music, making the marathon a fitting tribute to his memory.

Following the success of last year’s event, the McGachan family is gearing up for another Beatles Marathon at Portobello Town Hall, with twelve talented Edinburgh bands set to perform songs from 13 of The Beatles’ albums. The event aims to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to support individuals like Pat and provide vital assistance to families affected by MND.

The Beatles Marathon is a celebration of Pat’s life and his passion for music, offering a poignant reminder of the impact he had on his family and the community. The event promises to be a touching tribute to a beloved father and a fundraiser for a cause close to their hearts.
