Unidentified drones spotted over three US airbases in Britain

Unidentified drones have been sighted over three airbases in Britain, as confirmed by the United States Air Force (USAF). The incidents took place between November 20 and 22, with “small unmanned aerial systems” detected over RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, as well as RAF Feltwell in Norfolk. The USAF, which operates these bases, has stated that it is currently unclear whether the drones pose a hostile threat. They have not disclosed whether any defensive measures were deployed but mentioned the right to safeguard the installations.

A spokesperson for US Air Forces in Europe reported, “We can confirm that small unmanned aerial systems (UASs) were spotted in the vicinity of and over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell between Nov 20 and 22. The number of UASs fluctuated and they ranged in size/configuration.” The spokesperson further stated, “The UASs were actively monitored and installation leaders determined that none of the incursions impacted base residents or critical infrastructure.”

In order to protect operational security, specific force protection measures were not disclosed by the USAF. They reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the airbases and are in coordination with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of personnel and facilities. The situation is being closely monitored as investigations continue to ascertain the nature and intent of the drone activities.

Unmanned aerial systems operating over military installations raise concerns about potential security threats and the need for vigilance in safeguarding sensitive areas. The presence of unidentified drones over key airbases underscores the importance of robust security measures and swift responses to such incidents to maintain the integrity and safety of military installations.
