Vaping has ‘immediate’ negative impact on the body’s circulation, warns new study

A recent study has shed light on the immediate impact of vaping on the body’s circulation. The research, conducted by American researchers, explored the acute effects of smoking cigarettes and vaping on vascular function, even in the absence of nicotine. The vascular system, responsible for the circulation of blood and lymph fluid throughout the body, was found to be negatively affected by vaping and smoking.
While e-cigarettes contain fewer chemicals and toxins compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes, the study revealed that vaping can still harm vascular function and overall health. Dr. Marianne Nabbout, the lead author of the study from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, highlighted that despite the perception of e-cigarettes being a safer alternative to smoking, they can have detrimental effects on vascular health.
The study involved 31 healthy smokers and vapers aged 21 to 49, who underwent MRI scans before and after smoking or vaping sessions. The results showed a significant reduction in blood flow velocity in the thigh artery and decreased oxygen saturation in vapers. These effects were more pronounced in individuals using e-cigarettes with nicotine compared to those without nicotine.
Dr. Nabbout emphasised the importance of recognising the immediate impact of smoking and vaping on vascular health, indicating that chronic use could lead to vascular disease. The findings of the study are set to be presented at the upcoming annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago.
In conclusion, the study highlights the harmful effects of vaping on vascular function, underscoring the need for further research and public awareness on the potential risks associated with e-cigarette use. It serves as a reminder that refraining from smoking and vaping is essential for maintaining vascular health and overall well-being.
