‘We won £6.6m on lottery – but still look for bargains’

A lucky couple from Wakefield, Amanda and Graham Neild, experienced a life-changing event when they won a staggering £6.6 million in a National Lottery jackpot in 2013. Despite their massive windfall, the Neilds remained cautious with their spending, a behaviour shaped by their past financial struggles. Amanda and Graham, who worked in a carpet factory, had been participating in the lottery draw since its inception in 1994. The Mirror reported that prior to their jackpot win, the couple had to sell off their belongings at a car boot sale as they faced financial difficulties and were moving in with Amanda’s parents, who required care.
Reflecting on the moment they discovered their win, Amanda shared that after returning from the car boot sale and sitting on their last pieces of furniture, Graham checked the ticket numbers on his phone and broke the incredible news to her. The win prompted Graham to propose to Amanda, leading to their wedding at a local registry office a month later. Despite becoming multi-millionaires, the couple chose to celebrate their marriage modestly with a reception at their local rugby club.
One of the significant changes brought about by their win was the ability for the couple to retire and build a bungalow with an annexe for Amanda’s parents. Although they indulged in experiences like Amanda’s trip to Australia and purchasing a new car, the Neilds remain frugal with their spending. Amanda shared that while they do treat their grandchildren to shopping trips, they refrain from extravagant purchases and prefer to seek out bargains. She attributes this mindset to Graham’s Yorkshire roots, stating, “If there’s a bargain to have, he’ll have it!”
Despite their newfound wealth, Amanda emphasised the importance of staying grounded and not letting money change who they are as individuals. The Neilds opt for practicality over extravagance, with Amanda admitting that she is selective with her purchases, especially when it comes to clothing. She disclosed that she prefers not to spend exorbitant amounts on designer items, highlighting their commitment to maintaining their humility and values even after their lottery win.
