Wishaw MSP urges unpaid carers to check their eligibility for financial support

Wishaw and Motherwell MSP Clare Adamson is calling on unpaid carers to verify if they qualify for financial assistance from Social Security Scotland. The appeal comes after recent census data revealed that there are approximately 45,300 unpaid carers in North Lanarkshire. Adamson highlighted that many individuals who provide care for a friend or family member often do not recognise themselves as carers. It is crucial for them to connect with local carers’ organisations for guidance and assistance.

In November, the rollout of Scotland’s Carer Support Payment began, replacing Carer’s Allowance and widening eligibility to include those in full-time education, with the introduction of retroactive benefits for some applicants. This support scheme is part of a range of benefits available exclusively in Scotland, such as the Young Carer Grant and Carer’s Allowance Supplement.

Adamson emphasised, “The nationwide rollout of the Carer Support Payment is a significant milestone for Scotland. There are 45,300 unpaid carers across North Lanarkshire, and that number is likely an underestimate. Unpaid carers play vital roles in our community, facing challenging and demanding responsibilities. I want to ensure that nobody misses out on the financial support they are entitled to.”

She added, “If you are caring for someone – a neighbour, friend, or loved one – please check your eligibility for extra support through Social Security Scotland. And ensure you are registered with a carers’ organisation.” Eligible individuals can apply for the Carer Support Payment online, by phone, mail, or in person.

In summary, MSP Clare Adamson is advocating for unpaid carers in North Lanarkshire to explore their eligibility for financial aid through Social Security Scotland. The recent introduction of the Carer Support Payment scheme offers additional support to carers and aims to ensure that no one misses out on the assistance they deserve. It is essential for unpaid carers to recognise their role and seek support from local carers’ organisations to access the available benefits.
