Wishaw thug jailed for “unprovoked” attack on innocent dog walker

A man from Wishaw has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for what was described as a “vicious and unprovoked” attack on an innocent dog walker. Kieran O’Dwyer, aged 30, carried out the assault on June 4 in Northmuir Drive, Wishaw. The victim was walking his dog when O’Dwyer knocked him to the ground and proceeded to punch and kick him repeatedly. O’Dwyer, who had prior convictions, was also in breach of two bail orders at the time of the attack.
The incident unfolded around 11 pm when the victim greeted a group of men with a simple ‘Hello guys’ as he walked past them. This seemingly irritated O’Dwyer, who was already engaged in an argument with someone else. The victim was then attacked by O’Dwyer, who continued the assault even after the victim fell to the ground. Another person from the group also joined in the attack. A neighbour witnessed the incident, recorded a video, and alerted the police.
The victim sustained facial cuts and was taken to the hospital for treatment. In court, a video of the attack was shown, causing O’Dwyer to express embarrassment and remorse for his actions. His defence lawyer mentioned that O’Dwyer was under the influence of valium at the time of the assault. Despite his guilty plea, Sheriff Louise Gallacher condemned O’Dwyer’s actions as a brutal and unjustifiable attack on an unsuspecting member of the public.
Sheriff Gallacher highlighted O’Dwyer’s history of violence, disorderly conduct, and disregard for court orders. She acknowledged that the victim could have suffered life-threatening injuries and sentenced O’Dwyer to 20 months in prison. O’Dwyer’s time in custody was backdated to his arrest in June. This incident serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violence and the importance of upholding the law to protect innocent individuals within the community.
In my opinion, this case sheds light on the need for individuals to exercise restraint and respect towards others, even in moments of disagreement or conflict. It also emphasises the role of the justice system in holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and ensuring the safety of the public. The swift response of a vigilant neighbour in recording the attack and alerting the authorities demonstrates the importance of community involvement in upholding law and order.
