Young Scots fear cost of living crisis will make Christmas an anxious time for families

Young Scots are expressing concerns that the cost of living crisis will bring anxiety to families during this Christmas season, according to a recent survey conducted by the Action for Children charity. More than 400 young people between the ages of 11 and 21 shared their views on festive spending, with 78% of respondents fearing that financial pressures would make Christmas a stressful time. Some even described December as an “extremely anxious time.”
The survey also highlighted that a third of the youngsters surveyed worry that their friends or classmates may not be able to afford presents. Interestingly, three-quarters of the respondents expressed a desire for Christmas to be less about spending and more about supporting others. Furthermore, the same proportion indicated their willingness to forgo a present to provide one for a child in need.
Action for Children has launched its annual Secret Santa campaign, aiming to assist some of the most vulnerable children in the country. The charity provided support to individuals like Hugh, a single father of two young daughters under 10 years old in northern Scotland. Following a family crisis, Hugh found himself as a full-time carer with little support until a welfare officer at his daughters’ school connected him with Action for Children’s support services. The charity offers practical and emotional assistance to families with children aged 0 to 12, including clubs and groups for parents and children.
Fiona Steel, national director for Scotland at Action for Children, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the ongoing cost of living crisis in Scotland and the need to heed young people’s words about supporting others this Christmas. With many families struggling to afford essentials like food and warmth, the charity continues to advocate for and support these vulnerable children.
In related news, retailers have warned of a potential decrease in Christmas spending after a slight slowdown in inflation. According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and NielsenIQ, shop prices dropped by 0.6% in November, primarily driven by non-food items and a slight increase in fresh food prices.
As young Scots express their concerns about the cost of living crisis impacting Christmas celebrations, it is essential to recognise the importance of supporting families in need during this festive season. Actions like the Secret Santa campaign by Action for Children highlight the spirit of giving and community support, especially during challenging times. Let’s all come together to ensure that every child has a warm and joyous Christmas, regardless of financial constraints.
