Teenager Defends Her $80 Bag And Ends Up At The Brands Headquarters

A 17-year-old teenager posted a simple thank-you to her dad after receiving an $80 handbag, only for strangers to tell her she had no idea what luxury meant. The comments quickly turned her sweet TikTok into a debate about money, status and who gets to decide what counts as expensive.

Then the people who actually made the bag stepped into the story. Instead of distancing themselves from the controversy, Charles & Keith invited Zoe Gabriel and her father to the company’s headquarters in Singapore.

The $80 Bag That Started It All

Gabriel was 17, born in Manila and living in Singapore when she uploaded the TikTok that would unexpectedly attract millions of viewers. In the clip, she unwrapped a black Double Handle Tote from Charles & Keith and showed it to the camera, while her caption called it her “first luxury bag” and thanked her father.

The post was meant to celebrate a gift from her dad, but commenters quickly focused on one particular word.

One person wrote, “Who’s gonna tell her?” alongside a laughing emoji, while others questioned whether an S$79.90 Charles & Keith bag could really be described as luxury.

The debate quickly escaped Gabriel’s own followers and reached millions of strangers. People who had no connection to the teenager began weighing in on her family’s purchase and her choice of words.

Charles & Keith Has An Unexpected Luxury Connection

Charles & Keith was founded in Singapore in 1996 by brothers Charles and Keith Wong, who had previously worked in their mother’s shoe shop in Ang Mo Kio. The company eventually expanded to more than 600 stores and around 4,000 employees.

There was also an important detail that many commenters appeared to overlook. In 2011, LVMH, the group behind luxury names such as Louis Vuitton and Dior, acquired a 20% stake in Charles & Keith before the Wong brothers later bought it back.

That history didn’t settle the internet’s argument over the definition of luxury, but it showed that the brand’s position was more complicated than a simple comparison between an $80 tote and a designer handbag costing thousands.

Gabriel Revealed Why The Bag Meant So Much

Gabriel eventually responded to the criticism with a video explaining something the commenters couldn’t see from the original post: her family’s financial circumstances. She said money had always been an uncomfortable subject because she had grown up without much of it.

“Money is the topic that makes me most uncomfortable to talk about because growing up I did not have a lot,” Gabriel said. She explained that even buying bread from BreadTalk had once been something her family considered a luxury.

“We couldn’t buy new things as simple as bread from BreadTalk. That kind of thing was a luxury to us,” she said. Her explanation gave the $80 handbag a very different meaning from the one many commenters had assumed.

Her Parents Had Often Told Her “Next Time”

Gabriel also described what happened when she and her family passed stores while shopping. Her parents would tell her they could buy things later, but those purchases often remained out of reach.

“Every time we passed by a store, my parents would just say ‘next time’, but next time would never come,” she said. The handbag therefore represented something she had wanted and eventually received from her father after he worked hard to afford it.

She directly addressed the people who had mocked her definition of luxury. “To you, an $80 bag may not be a luxury. For me and my family, it is a lot, and I’m so grateful that my dad was able to get me one.”

Gabriel also had a message for the commenter who had questioned her. “Your comment spoke volumes about how ignorant you seem because of your wealth,” she said, before delivering the line that became one of the most widely shared parts of her response: “Remember that what’s cheap for you may be everything to another.”

Millions Watched The Argument Unfold

The response transformed the original controversy into a much larger viral story. By January 12, 2023, reports said the two videos had attracted roughly 5.6 million views combined, while the original later passed 6.7 million views.

Later figures put Gabriel’s response above 22 million views and more than 17,000 comments. The conversation also began changing as viewers shared their own experiences of being judged because of what they could afford.

One commenter told Gabriel, “You have a good and caring dad,” while another wrote, “Your dad definitely raised you well.” A different viewer recalled being laughed at in high school for using an inexpensive reusable shopping bag.

The story had moved beyond whether Charles & Keith qualified as a luxury brand. Gabriel’s explanation had given people a reason to talk about how differently the same purchase can feel depending on someone’s circumstances.

Then The Brand’s Founders Got Involved

The people at Charles & Keith had been following the viral controversy themselves. Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, the company’s founders decided to invite Gabriel and her father to meet them.

“Our heart really went out to Zoe, but we were so impressed with (how gracefully) she handled the situation, displaying wisdom far beyond her years and values that resonated with us greatly,” a company spokesperson told AsiaOne. The spokesperson added that the founders believed their products should spark joy, empower fashion lovers and give them confidence.

On January 11, 2023, Gabriel and her father had lunch with the company’s founders. The following day, they visited the Singapore headquarters, where Gabriel met Keith Wong, the company’s chief executive.

The Teenager Received A Few Surprises

The meeting wasn’t simply a photo opportunity or quick headquarters tour. Reports at the time said Charles & Keith sent Gabriel home with products and vouchers, including a pair of the brand’s Lucile satin platform sandals.

The reversal was striking because the teenager had originally been mocked over her understanding of the brand. Within days, she was being welcomed by the founders themselves after they saw how she responded to the criticism.

The price of the original bag had not changed, but the story surrounding it had. What began as a disagreement over a product category had become a personal story about a father giving his daughter something she genuinely valued.

Charles & Keith Later Made Her A Brand Ambassador

The relationship between Gabriel and Charles & Keith didn’t end with the headquarters visit. In March 2023, the company named her a brand community ambassador and featured her in its International Women’s Day campaign.

Gabriel modelled the purple Alia Chain-Strap Crossbody Bag and contributed her own writing to the campaign. Her message focused on giving women room to grow at their own pace, ending with a call for compassion.

“Women are like flowers. Our time and needs to grow may not always align, but that is okay,” Gabriel wrote. She closed the message with, “This International Women’s Day, let us celebrate with compassion.”

Only a few months earlier, strangers had used the brand’s name to mock her. Now Charles & Keith had chosen Gabriel as one of the faces of a campaign celebrating women.

The Price Tag Was Never The Whole Story

The controversy ultimately exposed how differently people can understand the same purchase. For someone accustomed to spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on designer accessories, an $80 handbag might seem ordinary, while for another family it can represent a major purchase.

Gabriel’s original caption gave viewers only a tiny piece of the story. The price was visible, but the financial circumstances behind the gift weren’t, and neither was the effort her father had put into earning the money.

That distinction became the real reason her response resonated with so many people. A product’s price can be measured precisely, but the significance of receiving it from someone you love cannot be read from a receipt.

The Comment That Started Everything Got A Very Different Answer

“Who’s gonna tell her?” became the comment that helped send Gabriel’s video around the world. But the eventual answer came from the founders of the company whose product had been at the center of the debate.

They invited Gabriel and her father to lunch, welcomed her to their headquarters and later made her a brand community ambassador. The teenager who had been mocked for calling an $80 bag luxury ended up becoming part of the brand’s own story.

The bag still had an S$79.90 price tag, but that number never explained why Gabriel treasured it. Her father’s work, the family’s past and the fact that he had finally been able to give her something she wanted were worth far more than the figure printed on the receipt.
