Despondent Weatherman Breaks From Live Forecast With Stark Warning About Hurricane Season

John Morales had spent decades telling South Florida what the weather was going to do. Then, during a live forecast in June 2025, the veteran meteorologist stopped talking about the next storm and started talking about whether he could still trust the system behind his predictions.
For 34 years, Morales had built his reputation on giving viewers something they desperately need during hurricane season: a clear answer when the forecast becomes dangerous. But as staffing shortages, reduced weather-balloon launches and uncertainty over hurricane reconnaissance aircraft began affecting the infrastructure behind those forecasts, he delivered an unusually blunt warning. He was no longer sure he could make the same promises.

Dorian Was The Forecast That Proved The System Worked
Morales began the June broadcast by showing viewers an old clip of himself from 2019, when Hurricane Dorian was threatening Florida. In the footage, he confidently explained that the storm would turn away from the state. It did, giving viewers a striking example of the kind of forecast certainty that can define a meteorologist’s career.
That confidence had been built over decades. Morales had worked in forecasting with the National Weather Service and eventually became one of South Florida’s longest-serving television meteorologists. He understood that people watching during hurricane season were not simply looking for weather information. They were deciding whether to evacuate, protect their homes or stay where they were based on the information coming from people like him.
In 2024, Morales described that relationship with South Florida by saying, “A ton of people have learned to put their trust in me. So while I’m not there every day to do ‘partly cloudy with a chance of showers,’ when there’s a threat, they know I’m going to be there.” That trust made what happened during the 2025 broadcast even more striking, because the veteran forecaster was about to tell viewers that the tools behind his work were becoming less reliable.

Then Morales Suddenly Went Off Script
After replaying the Dorian forecast, Morales changed direction. Instead of moving into the next part of the weather report, he addressed the cuts affecting the agencies responsible for gathering and producing weather information.
“And I am here to tell you that I am not sure I can do that this year, because of the cuts, the gutting, the sledgehammer attack on science in general,” Morales told viewers. He then made his personal concern unmistakable: “Am I worried? You bet I am!”
The unusual moment came during the early days of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, when accurate forecasting was becoming especially important for communities along the coast. Morales was not claiming that forecasts had already stopped working. His argument was that the system feeding those forecasts was losing people, observations and resources, potentially leaving meteorologists with less information to work with when a major storm approaches.
Florida Weather Offices Were Already Understaffed
Morales put staffing figures directly in front of viewers, focusing on the weather service offices responsible for the region stretching from Tampa to Key West. “From Tampa to Key West, including the Miami office, 20 to 40% understaffed,” he said.
Those offices do far more than provide information for television forecasts. They issue watches and warnings, communicate with emergency officials and process weather observations that help meteorologists understand what is happening on the ground and in the atmosphere. By April 2025, nearly half of the weather service’s forecast offices nationwide reportedly had vacancy rates of at least 20%, with staffing losses attributed to layoffs, resignations and experienced employees taking offered buyouts.

For a hurricane forecaster, staffing is not an abstract government statistic. Fewer experienced employees can mean fewer people available to maintain operations, analyze incoming information and support emergency decisions when weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. Morales’s concern centered on what those losses could mean when a storm arrives and there is little room for uncertainty.
The Missing Weather Balloons Were Another Warning Sign
The next issue Morales raised was less visible to the public but crucial to weather forecasting: weather balloons. These balloons are launched from sites around the country with instruments that measure temperature, humidity, wind and atmospheric pressure as they climb toward the upper atmosphere.
Those measurements become important inputs for forecasting models. By the time Morales spoke, he said there were about 17% fewer launches nationwide, while some locations in the Plains and Mountain West had dropped to one launch a day or none. The consequences can extend beyond the locations where the balloons are launched because weather systems move across large regions before reaching places such as South Florida.
“What we’re starting to see is that the quality of the forecast is becoming degraded,” Morales said. For viewers, the technical problem can eventually become much easier to understand: models may disagree more often, meteorologists may have to rely on less complete observations and forecasts may come with wider uncertainty when people most want a definitive answer.

Hurricane Hunters Could Also Face Problems
Morales then raised another concern that directly involved hurricanes themselves. NOAA’s hurricane hunter aircraft fly into storms to gather information that satellites cannot fully provide, including measurements of central pressure, wind and the structure of the storm.
“There’s also a chance, because of some of these cuts, that NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft will not be able to fly this year,” Morales said. Those aircraft provide observations from inside storms, giving forecasters information that can help determine how powerful a hurricane actually is rather than relying entirely on estimates from outside the system.
That distinction can become critical as a storm approaches land. Central pressure, wind speed and the structure of a hurricane can change the understanding of how dangerous the system is, which in turn affects warnings and preparations along the coast.
The Government Rejected The Idea That Forecasting Was Being Weakened
The administration pushed back against the concerns. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, “NOAA and the National Weather Service are using the most advanced weather models and cutting-edge hurricane tracking systems to provide Americans with real-time storm forecasts and warnings. With these models and forecasting tools, we have never been more prepared for hurricane season.”
The weather service also said it had received an exemption from the government-wide hiring freeze and planned to advertise permanent, mission-critical positions. Temporary reassignments were also being used to help maintain operations while staffing problems were addressed.
Morales’s argument was narrower than the broadest claims made around his broadcast. He did not say that meteorologists could no longer forecast hurricanes. He said the information feeding those forecasts was being reduced, and that the loss of personnel and observations could narrow the margin available to forecasters during dangerous weather.

His Warning Spread Far Beyond South Florida
The broadcast quickly moved beyond the local audience that normally watches Morales deliver a hurricane forecast. The clip reportedly reached millions of views and was widely shared online, turning a veteran meteorologist’s on-air frustration into a national conversation about the infrastructure behind weather forecasting.
The reason the moment resonated was obvious. Morales was not a stranger to hurricanes or forecasting uncertainty. He had spent decades doing the job, including the 2019 Dorian forecast that he used at the beginning of the segment to demonstrate what reliable forecasting had looked like.
His warning also carried a personal edge. After years of asking viewers to trust the information available to him, Morales was publicly acknowledging that he had concerns about whether the same level of information would continue reaching the people responsible for making those calls.
Months Later, Morales Said The Damage Was Still Visible
By March 2026, Morales was still describing the impact of the cuts as severe. “The cuts to NOAA and the National Weather Service have been devastating,” he said.
He also pointed to continuing gaps in weather-balloon observations, saying, “We’ve been missing 15 to 20 percent of our weather balloon data.” According to Morales, many of the missing observations were coming from areas upstream of South Florida, including the West, the Plains, the Intermountain West and Alaska.
He described another change viewers could see during the 2025 hurricane season. Broadcasters were increasingly putting two or three forecasting models on screen and explaining why they disagreed, rather than presenting one clean forecast path. For the average viewer, that is what uncertainty looks like when it reaches the television screen.
The Forecast Depends On What Happens Before The Storm Arrives
Weather forecasting can look deceptively simple from the outside. A meteorologist stands in front of a map and explains where a storm may go, but that final forecast depends on an enormous chain of observations, measurements, personnel and computer models working together.
Morales’s concern was about that chain. Weather balloons have to be launched. Instruments have to collect measurements. Forecast offices need experienced employees. Hurricane reconnaissance crews need aircraft and equipment. The resulting information then has to reach the models and the people interpreting them.
That is why his decision to interrupt a routine forecast carried more weight than a typical complaint about government spending. The man whose career was built on telling South Florida what the weather would do was warning that the quality of the information behind those predictions could determine how confidently he could answer the next time a dangerous storm appeared on the map.
For a region where hurricane forecasts can influence decisions measured in lives, homes and hours, that uncertainty is not something that stays inside a weather studio. It follows the storm all the way to the coast.
