Scientists Explain Why Your 40s Can Suddenly Feel So Exhausting

wake upNothing is obviously wrong, yet getting through an ordinary day can suddenly feel harder. You may sleep for eight hours, eat much as you always have, and still wake up feeling as though your body never fully switched off.
That shift can become especially noticeable in your 40s. One explanation from University of Bristol anatomist Michelle Spear points to a collision between gradual changes in muscle, cellular energy and sleep and a decade when work, family and other responsibilities can be demanding.

Muscle Loss Can Start Before You Notice It
Muscle is where some of the story begins. According to the National Institutes of Health, adults can lose around 3% to 5% of their muscle mass per decade starting around age 30. Spear places the decline slightly later, writing that “Muscle mass begins to decline from the late 30s onwards unless you exercise to maintain it.”
That does not mean someone suddenly becomes weak when they turn 40. The change is gradual, which makes it easy to overlook. Everyday tasks remain familiar, but the physical cost of those tasks can slowly increase as muscle mass and strength change.
Muscle also plays a role in how the body uses energy. It requires energy even when you are resting, so losing muscle can alter the amount of energy your body uses throughout the day. The stairs have not changed, but the effort required to climb them may feel different.
The same can apply to exercise. A workout that once produced little noticeable fatigue can take longer to recover from. That difference can become particularly obvious when sleep, stress and a busy schedule are already competing for the same limited reserves.

Your Cells May Be Producing Energy Less Efficiently
Muscle is only one part of the equation. Inside muscle cells are mitochondria, structures that help convert nutrients and oxygen into usable energy for the body.
Those mitochondria do not simply stop working during midlife. Spear describes the change differently, saying mitochondria “still produce energy, but less efficiently.” That gradual reduction can affect how the body handles physical and mental demands.
The precise molecular reasons for changes in cellular energy production are still being investigated. Researchers are studying how aging affects the processes that allow cells to produce and use energy, but there is no single switch that suddenly flips during someone’s 40s.
What people notice instead is the practical result. A late night can take longer to recover from. Several stressful days can leave a deeper mark. Exercise can require more recovery time than it once did.

Eight Hours Of Sleep Does Not Guarantee Eight Hours Of Recovery
Sleep adds another piece to the puzzle. The number of hours spent in bed does not tell the whole story because sleep changes as people age.
Deep slow-wave sleep is particularly relevant because it is associated with physical restoration. A JAMA study involving 149 healthy men aged 16 to 83 found that slow-wave sleep accounted for 18.9% of sleep among men aged 16 to 25, compared with 3.4% among those aged 36 to 50.
That study involved men only and was published in 2000, so its figures should not be treated as a personal prediction for everyone in their 40s. It does, however, illustrate the broader age-related change in deep sleep.
Spear describes the experience in straightforward terms: “Many people still get enough hours, but sleep fragments. Less deep sleep means less repair.” Someone can therefore spend eight hours in bed and still wake up feeling as though recovery was incomplete.

Hormone Changes Can Disrupt Sleep Too
Women can face another factor during their 40s as hormonal changes associated with perimenopause and menopause begin affecting sleep.
Spear writes, “Hormones don’t disappear in midlife. They fluctuate, particularly in women. Variability, not deficiency, disrupts patterns.” Those fluctuations can make sleep less predictable and can contribute to nights interrupted by changes in body temperature.
Stanford Lifestyle Medicine reports that 40% to 60% of women in perimenopause and menopause experience sleep difficulties. Changes in estrogen can affect temperature regulation, while changes in progesterone can contribute to lighter or more disrupted sleep.
Night sweats can therefore become part of a much larger fatigue problem. A person may wake repeatedly during the night without immediately connecting those interruptions to hormonal changes.
The result can be a frustrating cycle. You may spend plenty of time in bed while getting less restorative sleep, then begin the next day already carrying some of the previous day’s fatigue.

Midlife Can Bring Peak Demands At The Same Time
The biological changes alone do not explain why the 40s can feel particularly demanding. The other side of the equation is what life often asks from people during this period.
Careers can become more demanding as responsibilities increase. Children may still require substantial time and attention. Aging parents may begin needing more support. Financial commitments can also remain significant, including mortgages, education costs and household expenses.
Spear describes this collision as “a mismatch between biology and demand: small shifts in efficiency occurring at precisely the point when cognitive, emotional and practical loads are at their highest.”
That does not mean every person experiences their 40s this way. People’s health, sleep, family situations, jobs and activity levels vary enormously. The point is that even modest physical changes can feel much larger when they arrive alongside a heavy workload.
It also explains why fatigue during midlife can feel difficult to identify. Several small factors may be operating at once, rather than one obvious problem producing the entire experience.
The Research Does Not Prove Your 40s Are The Worst Decade
There is an important distinction behind the viral claim that the 40s are the most exhausting decade. Spear’s analysis was expert commentary, not a clinical trial ranking every decade of life according to exhaustion.
Her argument brings together established findings about muscle, cellular energy, sleep and midlife demands. The evidence supports those individual changes, but that does not amount to a scientific ranking that officially declares the 40s the hardest decade.
Other research also complicates the picture. A 2025 PLOS One study by David Blanchflower, Alex Bryson and Xiaowei Xu analyzed more than 1.7 million observations across 44 countries and reported that the long-observed midlife dip in wellbeing had disappeared in their data.
The researchers wrote that “Ill-being is no longer hump-shaped in age but now decreases in age.” Their findings point toward a different pattern, particularly for mental health, where younger people experienced greater levels of reported distress.
That means the headline idea should be treated as an explanation for why some people feel unusually depleted during midlife, rather than as a universal scientific rule.
Older Muscles Can Still Respond To Exercise
There is another finding that makes the story considerably less bleak. Age does not mean the body stops responding to exercise.
A Cell Metabolism study conducted through the Mayo Clinic compared 72 adults between ages 18 and 30 with adults between 65 and 80 after structured exercise. The younger participants saw mitochondrial capacity rise by 49%, while the older participants saw an increase of 69%.
The exercise program included high-intensity interval training, so the result should not be interpreted as proof that one specific workout is necessary for everyone. It does show that older muscle and cellular systems can respond strongly to physical activity.
Spear similarly points to strength training as a way for older adults to improve strength and metabolic health. She writes that exercise in people in their 60s, 70s and beyond “can restore strength, improve metabolic health and increase subjective energy within months.”
That finding changes the way midlife fatigue can be viewed. Gradual changes may be part of aging, but the body retains the ability to adapt. The margin may shrink with time, yet it does not disappear.
The Forties May Require A Different Kind Of Recovery
The biggest shift may be less about a sudden loss of energy and more about how quickly the body responds when recovery is neglected.
Several factors can overlap:
- Muscle: Gradual muscle loss can begin decades before old age and may affect strength and energy use.
- Mitochondria: Cellular energy production can become less efficient with age.
- Sleep: Deep sleep generally declines, while fragmented sleep can reduce recovery.
- Hormones: Perimenopause and menopause can disrupt temperature regulation and sleep for many women.
- Daily demands: Work, parenting, caregiving and financial responsibilities can pile up during the same years.
None of those factors automatically means something is medically wrong. Persistent or severe fatigue can have many other causes, including thyroid problems, anemia, sleep apnea and depression, which require proper medical evaluation.
The practical lesson is simpler. If your body takes longer to recover than it once did, pushing through every warning sign may not be the only answer. Sleep, resistance training, regular movement and recovery time can become more important as the years pass.
Your Body May Be Asking For A New Equation
The strange part of turning 40 is that life can look almost identical on the outside while the body’s response to it quietly changes.
A late night may cost more. A stressful week may linger. A workout may require more recovery. None of that automatically means the best years are behind you.
The evidence points to something more useful: aging changes the body’s margins, but exercise and other habits can still influence how well it performs. The goal is not to chase the energy of your 20s. It is to build a body that can keep meeting the demands of the life you actually have.
